As he scattered it by hand across his field, some of the seeds fell on the hard, packed dirt of the path. They were quickly trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air swooped down and devoured them. Other seeds fell on a rocky patch of ground. They sprouted up quickly because the soil was so shallow.
