Harold Frederick Shipman was born in 1946 in Nottingham, England. He was known as intelligent and disciplined. Teachers described him as serious and focused. When Shipman was 17 years old, his mother died from lung cancer. During her illness, she was treated with strong pain-relief medication. Some investigators later questioned whether this early exposure to powerful drugs may have influenced him. Shipman went on to study medicine at the University of Leeds and qualified as a doctor in the early 1970s. He began working as a general practitioner — a family doctor. To his patients, he appeared caring and attentive.
