The clip comes from the 2007 documentary Encounters at the End of the World directed by Werner Herzog. The original film and therefore the penguin footage was shot and released in 2007. In the footage, you see an Adélie penguin break away from its colony (near the coast) and walk alone toward an interior mountain range, far from other penguins and the sea. This is highly unusual behavior for penguins. It was described as the penguin’s choice to a kind of fatal drift or “death march” because walking inland offers no food or survival prospects.
