The Great Lakes had pirates. Real ones. Documented ones. And one of them ended up on the right side of the law on the same water. The Great Lakes were the cargo highway of North America. Lumber, grain, iron ore moving through remote water with almost no law enforcement. Predictable routes, valuable cargo, and nobody watching. That was opportunity. His name was Dan Seavey. They called him Roaring Dan. In 1908 on Lake Michigan he boarded the schooner Nellie Johnson, got the crew drunk, took the helm, sailed it to port, and sold the cargo. The US Revenue Cutter Service
