CASE FILE: The Statue Greece Never Stopped Asking For In 1801, a British diplomat began removing sculptures from the Parthenon—while Greece was under Ottoman rule. The statues were lowered by rope, packed into crates, and shipped to London. One shipment even sank. The pieces were salvaged anyway. Lord Elgin claimed he had permission. Greece says that document was never valid—and may never have existed in the form later described. By 1816, Britain purchased the sculptures and placed them in the British Museum.
