You know Gasparilla as Tampa’s giant pirate party… but here are secrets most people don’t hear about. José Gaspar, the ‘fearsome pirate,’ was basically a marketing character. His first written story showed up in an early 1900s brochure promoting a fancy inn and railroad on Florida’s west coast. Local promoters loved the idea and built Tampa’s festival around that legend, even though historians can’t find real proof that pirate ever sailed here.
