According to the Puranas, when Garuda was carrying the Amrita (Nectar of Immortality), a few drops fell on the earth. Rasona grew from those drops. Because it came from Amrita, it is a powerful Rasayana; however, because it touched the ground or was associated with Rahu/Ketu, it has a strong, "tamasic" odor (Ugragandha).
