Once upon a time in a village in West Africa, there lived a kind girl named Chinye. She was gentle, hardworking, and loved by everyone. But at home, her stepmother was cruel and made her do all the chores, while her own daughter did nothing. One night, Chinye was sent to fetch water deep in the forest. The path was dark, and she was afraid. Along the way, she met magical forest spirits. They offered her different gourds (calabashes) to carry home. Chinye chose the smallest and plainest one because she was humble and did not want to be greedy.
