Evan lived with his dog, Brutus, in a narrow, creaking little house at the edge of the woods. Brutus was enormous—more belly than bone, waddling when he walked, snoring like thunder when he slept. Evan loved him. Brutus made the lonely house feel full. But lately, Brutus had been… strange. Every night, around 2 a.m., Evan would hear Brutus padding down the hallway. Whump… whump… whump. Heavy, slow footsteps. Brutus would stop outside Evan’s door and scratch—one long drag of nails down the wood. Evan always opened the door, expecting his goofy, slow-eyed companion. But every time, Brutus wasn’t there.
