He dominated the Southeast Asian Games with a total of 23 gold medals since 1987. He excelled at Foothill College, setting a national record in the 100-meter freestyle in 1993, before earning a scholarship to Arizona State University, where he was a four-time All-American and Pac-10 finalist. As of 2017, he remains the only NCAA Division I All-American from Indonesia
