For a moment, Toma’s heart tightened. This was his last meal. If he gave it away, he would go to bed hungry and wake up with nothing. He looked at the pot, then at the old man. The silence stretched. Finally, Toma stood up and smiled gently. “Come,” he said. “Sit with me.” He divided the food into two equal parts and handed one to the stranger. The old man’s eyes widened in surprise. “But this is not much,” he said. “You should keep it for yourself.” Toma shook his head. “Food tastes better when it is shared,” he replied.
