Mateo is packing boxes while his roommate sleeps. He finds a letter under the couch, addressed to him but never opened. The date on it is from three years ago. He sits down and reads it. His hands start to shake.

When his roommate walks in and asks what's wrong, Mateo looks up. The letter is from someone who died the month after it was sent — and it ends with a sentence that changes everything he thought he knew.

Mateo's family has sent him a compilation video for his birthday. He watches it alone in his apartment. Most of it is silly — old clips, messages from cousins. Then a new segment starts. It is a message from his grandmother, recorded the week before she died. She says she has left him something and that he will know when he finds it.

The video ends. Mateo replays that part. In the background, barely visible, is a painting on the wall. He has that painting. He has had it for years — and he has never looked at the back.
